  1. When trying to create a child branch from a branch that already has the same task/named child branch Plastic refuses.

Maybe this could be a question, "branch already exists, continue?" so you can still create the branch.

This is useful for bug fixing when it's inappropriate to go back to the original branch and great for keeping the JIRA updated with plastic changes, instead of workarounds like renaming branches.

  2. In the main Plastic GUI, display a notification if the installed version is older than the latest build available for download. Check periodically while GUI is running. For us early adopters... ;)

  3. Most of the Plastic Server/Client configuration files reside in the installation folder of PlasticSCM (on both Windows and Macs). To change them you need superuser privileges. If you decide to reinstall/upgrade PlasticSCM these files get overwritten (e.g. when you install the Debian packages). So the settings should really go to a place where a normal user can edit them and where they will not get overwritten by an upgrade.

On Linux/Mac this is partially done for the client side with the .plastic4 folder inside the user's home, but things like the logging configuration or configuration for the CM tool still…

  4. For read-only xlinks, the branch expansion rules have no significance. Therefore I suggest the following clarifying changes:

In the "Create/Edit xlink" dialog, when the "Writable" checkbox is not checked the "Branch expansion rules" list should be hidden (or disabled and empty). No default rule should be added and related warning boxes should not be displayed.

When checking/unchecking the "Writable" checkbox during creation, default rule(s) should be added/removed accordingly. Also, the whole rules list should be shown/hidden (or at least enabled/disabled) accordingly.

  5. In the "Branch Changes" window ("View - Explore changesets on this branch"), the list of changesets is displayed in chronologically increasing order with the oldest one on top.

IMHO, it would be more consistent with the similar "View - View changesets on this branch" if the ordering was inverted so that the latest changeset was displayed on top and pre-selected. I'd think it is more common to start at the current version and work backwards through the history, as in most other views inside Plastic.

At the very least there should be a (remembered) option to invert the ordering. Personally…

  6. The loads of text + interactive question that is spewed out in the console from the Plastic "cm" CLI command when there is some mismatch in the server certificate can disrupt any attempts at automation using the shell. If a certificate problem is expected, it would be nice if the certificate could be auto-accepted using a command line option.

We tried to add the icon, but our current menu implementation is not ready to do it on Windows.

So the effort to add this feature doesn’t really make sense.

A future GUI using WPF (if we ever go to WPF fully) will get this solved.

  8. Currently, there is no easy way to jump into the Branch Explorer from selected branch(es) in the Branches view.

This would be very convenient since it can sometimes be cumbersome to locate a specific task branch etc in the main Branch Explorer, while it's quick to find it in the excellent "Tree view" of the Branches view.

I'd like to have in the Branches view a (partial?) clone of the "Branch Explorer" submenu from the Branch Explorer view:
    * Show selected branches in a new diagram
    * Show selected and related branches in a new diagram
    * etc

    Also, when…

  9. If one has setup a plastic Web UI, it would be nice if there was a way inside the Plastic GUI to open the corresponding webpage for a branch, changeset etc.

The base URL could be configured in Preferences and the associated context commands could be hidden if no URL is entered (or if the functionality is disabled).

  10. Our company uses MATLAB/Simulink to generate model based C code. We need to tie this in somehow to Plastic. Matlab/Simulink can use subversion. Can something be developed in Plastic to tie in to this?

You can already edit the default. In Linux and Mac it is doable through the GUI. On Windows, just edit client.conf. I think the default is good for 99% of the people. For the rest 1% probably editing client.conf is reasonable.

  12. This would be a shortcut to browsing the selected repo on its /main branch, instead of having to do:

"View branches" - Select /main - right click - "View - Browse repository on this branch".

Thanks for the suggestion, but this time we can’t really accept it.

I mean, if we select “main”, then next user will ask “make it configurable”, or “why main”, so we’ll have to add another option, going into the “feature creep mode” all software books advice you against :’-(

We don’t discard reopening this in the near future once we complete the re-implementation of the Windows GUI based on the simplified Mac and Linux counterparts.

  13. When uninstalling/upgrading Plastic, it seems it sometimes silently fails to remove the Visual Studio plugin. This leads to an error message during installation, saying that the vsixinstaller.exe command line finished with an error. In fact, this error you get from vsixinstaller can be simply that the plugin is already installed in all clients (which you can discover by running the same command line interactively from cmd). It would be nice if this "non-fatal" error is detected and reported as such, instead of reporting a generic error message...

  17. Since Plastic SCM does not differentiate internally between top-level branches and child branches, it should also make this clear to the user within the User Interface.

So, instead of having two seperate menu points of "Create child branch ..." and "Create top-level branch ...", merge them together under one clear menu entry "Create new branch ... Ctrl+N"

Then, in the branch creation dialog, let the user decide, what kind of branch he wants to create.
And the default Changeset for the new branch should ever be the changeset, where I'm currently at.

    Short summary:
The branches are for me like…

  18. It would be very useful if there was a way to automatically save comments entered into the Pending Changes/Comments text box such that if you reopened the Pending Changes window the previously entered comments were not lost. I believe most other SC clients do this (TortoiseHg/Svn/SourceTree).

  20. When you use the "Show Version Tree" command in IntelliJ on the Mac, you will get some weird error message about missing an xmodmap command. See also attached file. It would be nice if this command actually worked.
